Compagnie Philippe Saire
Since the Compagnie Philippe Saire was founded in 1986, some forty creations have been created and over 1800 performances have been given in more than 200 cities worldwide. Cie Philippe Saire is resident company at Théâtre Sévelin 36, Lausanne.
It has regularly performed in exhibitions, art galleries, gardens, urban spaces and other non-stage venues. More recently, this taste for experimentation is at the heart of Les Dispositifs, a series of pieces with close ties to the visual arts. In Black Out (2011), the movement of the performers draws shapes in a black material, with the audience positioned overhead; NEONS (2014) shows a couple moving in a play of black and light; Vacuum (2015) sees two dancers literally floating between two horizontally placed neon tubes; in Ether (2018), a duo moves between wisps of smoke in a vanishing-point installation; Salle des Fêtes (2021) plays with helium-filled balloons in a circular space; Velvet (2022) uses stage curtains in a succession of materialities and references. Vacuum gave rise to an all-audience version, Hocus Pocus (2017), which happily passed the 450-performance mark.
Philippe Saire
A major figure in contemporary dance in Switzerland, Philippe Saire has created some thirty shows to date, as well as performances, short films and workshops. His diverse interests include the visual arts, theater and cinema. These disciplines permeate his choreographic works, which are often intense and finely crafted. His various teaching activities have led him to develop a mode of treatment that weaves text and movement into stagings that move away from the strict framework of dance to apply to theater. He has staged Tony Kushner's Angels in America, and more recently Dennis Kelly's Orphelins.
Born in Algeria in 1957, he spent the first five years of his life there. After settling in Lausanne, he trained in contemporary dance and took courses abroad, notably in Paris.
In 1986, he founded his own company. Based in the Lausanne region, it developed its creative work and contributed to the growth of contemporary dance throughout Switzerland.
In 1995, the Compagnie Philippe Saire inaugurated the Théâtre Sévelin 36, its own space for work and creation. Located in Lausanne, this venue is entirely devoted to contemporary dance, contributing to the circulation of works with an international dimension, while programming local companies whose emergence it encourages. In 2013, the Théâtre Sévelin 36 was awarded the “Prix spécial de danse” by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.
