Compagnie Marie Chouinard

Although Compagnie Marie Chouinard has been internationally renowned for over thirty years, its history dates back to 1978, when Marie Chouinard presented her first work, Cristallisation. This was followed by some 30 internationally acclaimed solos, including Marie Chien Noir (1982), S.T.A.B. (Space, Time and Beyond) (1986) and L'Après-midi d'un faune (1987), all landmark choreographies of the last 40 years. The company's dancers brilliantly deliver Marie Chouinard's daring, singular works. Choreographic art is also explored on multiple platforms: interactive multimedia, film, photography, drawing, performance and writing.

Marie Chouinard

Marie Chouinard, born in Quebec City, spent 4 months alone in Percé at the age of 16, a period that transformed her life. As a choreographer, she traveled the world as a solo dancer for 12 years before founding COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD in 1990.

Her radical and profound works, with their unique signature, are long-lasting and feature in the repertoires of major international ballet companies. A director (films, applications, virtual reality works), writer (Zéro Douze, Chantiers des extases), visual artist (photographs, drawings, installations, performances), she also creates choreographic works in situ, for screens, in real time on the web, and more. Named Officière des Arts et des Lettres in France, recipient of a Bessie Award in New York, she has received some thirty of the most prestigious awards and honors. She founded the Prix de la Danse de Montréal in 2011 and was appointed Director of Dance at the Venice Biennale from 2017 to 2020. Marie Chouinard is currently preparing a solo exhibition.
