Compagnie Virginie Brunelle

The Compagnie Virginie Brunelle is a choreographic organization founded in 2009 that produces and presents original works under the artistic and general direction of the eponymous choreographer. Virginie Brunelle graduated from UQÀM in 2008 with a B.A. in dance, and has quickly made a name for herself on the Montreal dance scene. The company contributes to the promotion of dance and public appreciation of the arts through a dozen works, which have been presented in numerous theaters in the metropolis, as well as across Quebec, Canada and internationally.

Having clearly defined her goal, Virginie systematically embarks on musical research, an essential phase in her creative process. Music becomes her source of inspiration, guiding the choreographic construction in which each idea carries its own intention, spatial composition and symbolism. Once in the studio, she fine-tunes the structure by specifying the dynamics of rhythms, pauses, the intensity of gestures, their delicacy, looks and breaths, like notations of nuances, takes and phrasing on a musical score. This precise approach, in which every element is meticulously pondered, enables Virginie to infuse emotion into every gesture, creating a rich and profound artistic experience.

Virginie Brunelle

In 2008, fresh from her studies, Virginie created Les cuisses à l'écart du cœur, a choreography for seven dancers that won numerous awards and mentions. Equiped with this initial success, she devoted herself to the creation of her second piece, Foutrement, which won the Prix du Public du CAM en tournée (2017). In 2011, Virginie Brunelle opens the fall season at Théâtre La Chapelle with her third opus, Complexe des genres, which wins second prize at the Aarhus International Choreography Competition in Denmark. Three years later, she presented PLOMB, and in 2016, she created À la douleur que j'ai. These pieces have toured internationally, circulating in Europe and Canada. In the wake of this international recognition, the choreographer was invited abroad in 2018 to create a work for the Gauthier Dance Theaterhaus Stuttgart. The result is Beating, initially presented in Germany, but touring Canada and Europe in 2018-2019. Finally, in 2019, she creates Les corps avalés, a piece for seven dancers, accompanied on stage by the Quatuor Molinari. Presented by Danse Danse at Théâtre Maisonneuve, this work was a resounding success with critics and audiences alike. In the spring of 2022, Virginie presented her latest creation, Fables, a large-scale work for twelve performers and a pianist, which had its world premiere at the Lugano Dance Project Festival in Switzerland and was subsequently presented at Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts in Montreal in December 2022. Most recently, Virginie directed her first short dance film, Réminiscences, which had its world premiere in official competition at the Festival Regard, as well as at some twenty dance film festivals, where it won a dozen international awards. Finally, she completed a second short film, Show me the exit, co-directed with Nicolas Berzi.
